WHAT A WINTER COLT WINS ON DEBUT

14 September 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s four time G1 winning sire What A Winter has been firing on all cylinders this season thus far, and the multiple Equus Champion struck again when responsible for an eye catching debut winner at Durbanville on Tuesday.

What A Winter’s four-year-old son Love In Winter was sent off a 5-1 shot for the third race on Durbanville’s card, the Racecape Powered by Hollywoodbets Maiden Special Weights (1000m) and he duly obliged to make a winning debut.

Under S’Manga Khumalo, the Vaughan Marshall trained colt blasted home to win going away by two and a quarter lengths and he looks well above average. The race was a total triumph for What A Winter, whose sons Love In Winter, Georgie George and Cannatonic finished first, second and fourth respectively.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Love In Winter is out of the Dark Angel mare Lost In Love.

His sire What A Winter, who is currently heading the South African General Sires List, had a wonderful season in 2021-2022 when he was responsible for six black type winners including the graded stakes winners Miss Cool and Winter Smoke.

South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2020-2021, What A Winter is currently responsible for 21 stakes winners including former Equus Champion Russet Air.
