Drakenstein Stud sires enjoyed notable success at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, and Drakenstein’s consistent stallion What A Winter ended the day on a high for the farm when his son Isivunguvungu ran out a facile winner of the last race, the Listed Marshalls World Of Sport Umngeni Handicap (1000m).
The 2022 Umngeni Handicap, the last South African feature race of the 2021-2022 racing season, proved a triumph for What A Winter, whose sons Isivunguvungu and Winter Flight ran first and third respectively.
Under Richard Fourie, four-year-old Isivunguvungu raced just off the pace early on in Saturday’s sprint, before hitting the front 300m from home and powering away to score by nearly three and a quarter lengths.
In the process, the Peter Muscutt trained Isivunguvungu provided Hollywood Syndicate with their 100th winner of the 2021-2022 racing season.
Bred by Narrow Creek Stud, Isivunguvungu has now won three of just eight starts, with the gelding also victorious in the Listed In Full Flight Handicap earlier this season.
The gelding’s four time G1 winning sire What A Winter has enjoyed another fine season in 2021-2022 with the former champion sprinter’s flagbearers including G2 Heineken SA Nursery winner Miss Cool, G2 Racing 240 Camellia Stakes winner Winter Smoke and G1 Pongracz Cape Flying Championship runner up Mr Cobbs.
South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2020-2021, What A Winter has nine lots on offer at the upcoming August Two Year Old Sale.
