Drakenstein Stud’s outstanding sire Trippi has had a fantastic season in 2022-2023, and the End Sweep son’s season got even better when his Drakenstein Stud bred and owned son Winchester Mansion stormed home to win the G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday afternoon.
An impressive winner of the G3 Hollywoodbets Dolphins Cup Trial last time out, the Brett Crawford-trained gelding was given a superb ride from Kabelo Matsunyane to claim Saturday’s R5 000 000 showpiece race in fine style.
With favourite See It Again having hit the front close home, Matsunyane managed to coax every inch from the very game Winchester Mansion, and the pair went on to score a famous victory by a neck.
Winchester Mansion provided his rider with his first top-level success, with the gelding also giving Brett Crawford and Drakenstein Stud their first triumphs in South Africa’s most famous horse race.
Runner up, behind another son of Trippi, in the G2 World Sports Betting 1900 earlier in the season, the winner was three sons of Trippi to contest the 2023 Hollywoodbets Durban July.
Winchester Mansion, who is out of the Spectrum mare Sea Point, has now won five of 15 starts and has earned R2 858 100 in prize money.
He is the 13th G1 winner for Trippi and is the first Trippi-sired runner to win the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
Winchester Mansion, who is one of 90 stakes winners for Trippi, also provided his remarkable sire with the second leg of a Met/July winning double, with Trippi’s now Drakenstein-based son Jet Dark having captured the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met earlier this season.
South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016, Trippi’s remarkable season in 2022-2023 has seen his offspring triumph in all of the G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July, G1 WSB Cape Town Met, G1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, G1 Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge, G2 World Sports Betting Guineas, G2 Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes, G2 WSB Green Point Stakes, G3 Cape Classic, G3 Hollywoodbets Matchem Stakes, and G3 Hollywoodbets Diana Stakes -among others!
Trippi is also the sire of the hugely exciting two-year-old filly October Morn, a six-length winner of the recent Perfect Promise Sprint.
