For a second year in a row, a son of former Champion Sire Trippi won the G3 Hollywoodbets Matchem Stakes at Hollywoodbets Durbanville. With Trippi’s Drakenstein Stud bred and owned son Trip Of Fortune victorious in the 2022 Matchem Stakes, it was left to the Trippi sired champion Charles Dickens, also bred and owned by Drakenstein, to win the 2023 renewal, which was run on Saturday.
Last season’s Equus Champion 3YO Colt and Equus Champion Miler for 2022-2023 duly made it nine wins from just 11 starts with a courageous display in the Matchem Stakes of 2023.
Under regular rider Aldo Domeyer, the chestnut four-year-old cruised up somewhere from home and fought on gamely to hold off dual G1 winner Gimme A Prince and score by a long neck.
It was a fifth graded win for the brilliant Charles Dickens, whose previous graded triumphs included both the 2023 G1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas and G1 Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge. Also victorious in the G2 World Sports Betting Guineas and G3 Cape Classic last season, Charles Dickens has now earned R3 875 313.
The 2023 Matchem Stakes was yet another major feather in the cap for Trippi, whose G1-winning daughter Real Princess is the dam of Matchem runner-up Gimme A Prince.
Trippi’s G2 Selangor Cup-winning son Gold Standard is the sire of Golden Hostess, who ran out a decisive winner of Saturday’s G3 Hollywoodbets Diana Stakes.
South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016, Trippi had a magnificent season in 2022-2023, when he was responsible for the G1 winners Charles Dickens, Jet Dark, Trip Of Fortune, and Hollywoodbets Durban July winner Winchester Mansion.
