Drakenstein Stud’s consistently successful sire What A Winter came up with two more winners at the Vaal on Thursday -with his son Far Away Winter making a big impression when breaking his maiden.
Trained by Michael and Adam Azzie, two-year-old Far Away Winter had finished fourth on his only previous start, but made amends for that defeat with a breathtaking win on Thursday. Under Diego De Gouveia, the Drakenstein Stud bred gelding annihilated his rivals, with Far Away Winter pulling well clear in the closing stages to thrash by four and a quarter lengths.
Out of the Trippi mare Fromafar, Far Away Winter was a R550 000 buy from the 2021 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
The gelding was one of two two-year-old winners for What A Winter (South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2yos in 2020-2021) on Thursday.
The four time G1 winner is also the sire of Dame Twining, who captured the first race on the Vaal card for Paul Peter and Phenisile Mongqawa.
Bred by Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, Dame Twining is out of the Excelebration mare Madame De Guava.
Currently third on South Africa’s Leading Sires of 2YOs log for 2021-2022, What A Winter has nine lots on offer at this year’s August Two Year Old Sale, including a colt (Lot 45) out of G1 SA Fillies Classic winner Orchid Island.
