Drakenstein Stud’s inform resident sire What A Winter had a great season in 2021-2022, and the former Equus Champion’s great run continued when his daughter Humdinger captured Sunday’s Listed Off To Stud Stakes (1600m) run at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.
A four-year-old filly trained by Mike de Kock, Humdinger was given a superb, front running ride from Kabelo Matsunyane.
The latter wasted no time in taking Humdinger to the front, and the pair kept finding more in front, before Humdinger was taken to the outside rail. Matsunyane kept Humdinger going in front, and the daughter of What A Winter stayed on gamely to score by just over three-parts of a length.
Bred by Ridgemont Highlands, Humdinger has now won four of 12 starts, with the consistent filly out of the placings just twice thus far.
The filly is out of the Fort Wood mare Himalyan Hill, and is thus bred on the same What A Winter/Fort Wood cross as fellow stakes winners Fort Winter and Glacier Gold.
Sunday’s winner is the 21st stakes winner for What A Winter, with that four time G1 winner having headed South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs premiership in 2020-2021.
Himdinger was one of two winners for What A Winter at Scottsville on Sunday, with the sire also responsible for Winter Pearl, who was victorious in Sunday’s third race, the S and S Insurance Brokers Maiden Plate (1400m). Another trained by Mike de Kock, the gelded four-year-old was booted home to victory by Gareth Wright. Bred by Drakenstein Stud, Winter Pearl had finished third over 1200m last time out.
Also responsible for last season’s graded stakes winning fillies Miss Cool and Winter Smoke, What A Winter has nine lots on offer at the 2022 August Two Year Old Sale.
