GUINEAS SUCCESS FOR THE DUKE

9 March 2020

Drakenstein Stud’s five time G1 winning resident sire Duke Of Marmalade was responsible for his 44th individual stakes winner when his three-year-old daughter Sailing Ship romped to a facile victory in the Listed Breeders Guineas (1600m) at Fairview racecourse on Friday.

red and owned by Drakenstein Stud, Sailing Ship outclassed her 13 rivals, with the Candice Bass-Robinson trained filly pulled clear to win Friday’s Listed race by five and a quarter lengths under Sandile Mbhele.

The progressive Sailing Ship, who had competed in the G2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes and G1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas in her two previous starts, has now won or placed in six of her ten starts.

She is one of several smart 3yos representing Duke Of Marmalade this season, with others including G3 Gauteng Tourism Authority Magnolia Handicap winner True To Life, G1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic contender Dancing Feather and impressive debut winner Our Prized Jewel.

The sire of more than 70 black type horses, Duke Of Marmalade’s progeny also include such notable G1 winners as Big Orange, Nutan, Simple Verse, Sound Of Freedom and Star Of Seville.
