GREYVILLE TREBLE FOR WHAT A WINTER

14 November 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s red hot sire What A Winter had another good day at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday when progeny of that four time G1 winner won three of the eight races run on the day.

What A Winter got off to flyer when his blue blooded daughter I Like It Hot won the first race on the card, the tabGold -The Intelligent Bet! Maiden Plate (F&M) (1000m).

The race was a triumph for What A Winter, who was also responsible for runner up Stormz Power.

Trained by Dennis Drier, I Like It Hot dug down deep to best her paternal half-sister and break her maiden by a neck.

The three-year-old, who is out of the Qui Danzig mare Bump ‘N Grind, had finished third last time out, with I Like It Hot having now finished in the money of each of her five starts.

What A Winter’s second success on Sunday came when his promising son Rugger Bugger followed up a third on debut when breaking his maiden by landing the fourth race, the Track and Ball Gaming Maiden Plate (1200m). Under Calvin Habib, the Wendy Whitehead trained colt pulled out more in the closing stages to get off the mark by just over half a length, at just the second time of asking.

Out of Trippi’s champion daughter Hammie’s Hooker, Rugger Bugger was bred by the Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud.

The What A Winter colt was a R550 000 buy from the 2021 National Yearling Sale.

What A Winter struck again on Sunday when his son Winter Flight produced a powerful late burst to win the sixth race, the Gold Circle Racing Youtube Channel Pinnacle Stakes (1200m). The Kumaran Naidoo trained five-year-old was given a superb ride by the red hot Richard Fourie, with Fourie getting his mount up on the wire to account for another What A Winter son, Tread Swiftly, by a neck.

Bred by Ridgemont Highlands, Winter Flight has now won six times in total and also finished third, to yet another son of What A Winter, Isivunguvungu, in last season’s Listed Marshalls World Of Sport Umngeni Handicap.

What A Winter, whose flagbearers this season include G2 Topbet Joburg Spring F and M Challenge winner Humdinger and The Ready To Run Stakes hero Seeking The One, had also enjoyed success at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday where his daughter Everlasting won the first race on the card.
