Drakenstein Stud’s red hot resident sire What A Winter, fresh off supplying a double at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday, made it five wins in two days when he came up with three eye catching winners at Turffontein on Thursday.
Star of What A Winter’s trio of winners was the progressive Vanderbilt, who made it five wins in a row when running out a comprehensive winner of the fifth race on Thursday.
Trained by Paul Peter, four-year-old Vanderbilt was given a well judged, front running ride by Rachel Venniker to win Thursday’s 4Racing.TV MR 90 Handicap (1600m) by four and a quarter lengths.
Unbeaten since relocating to Gauteng, the Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred gelding has now won his last five starts by an aggregate of more than 13 lengths.
Now a five time winner from 11 starts, Vanderbilt is out of the Strike Smartly mare Cherry On The Cake.
A half-brother to former Horse Of The Year Summer Pudding, Vanderbilt was a R600 000 buy from the 2020 National Yearling Sale.
He was one of three winners on Thursday for What A Winter, with that sprint champion also responsible for Tulip Tree, victorious in Turffontein’s third race, and Far Away Winter, who captured the sixth race on the card.
Another bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, three-year-old Tulip Tree justified tote favouritism when capturing the TAB4Racing App Maiden Plate (F&M) (1800m) by a long neck, while her paternal half-brother Far Away Winter made it two wins from just four starts when he claimed Thursday’s Racing240 For Racing. For You Graduation Plate (1000m).
South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2016-2017, and Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2020-2021, What A Winter has six lots on offer at this week’s August Two Year Old Sale.
