Drakenstein Stud’s five time G1 winning stallion Duke Of Marmalade is enjoying increasing success as a broodmare sire and the former Cartier Champion once again made his presence felt as a maternal grandsire at Doncaster on Thursday.
Progressive three-year-old Free Wind, whose dam is the Duke Of Marmalade sired stakes winner Alive Alive Oh, made it back to back group race wins when she demolished her field to land Thursday’s G2 Hippo Pro3 Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes in scintillating fashion.
Sent off the 15/8 favourite, Free Wind, a winner of four of five starts in 2021, ran out a hugely-impressive seven-length winner.
Paddy Power go 9/2 about Free Wind’s chance in the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot next month, although the daughter of Galileo has another option in France.
Joint trainerThady Gosden said: “That was very pleasing. Obviously the trip was an unknown. She’d only won over a mile and a half before in France. She could have run in the St Leger. We’ll never know what would have happened. Obviously today’s race was a different kettle of fish.
“The obvious options are the fillies and mares race on Champions Day and there’s also the Prix Royallieu on Arc day as well.”
Free Wind had previously captured the G3 Prix Minerve and she has won four of just six starts overall.
The filly is out of Listed Salsabil Stakes winner Alive Alive Oh -whose sire Duke Of Marmalade also ranks as the broodmare sire of this year’s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby runner up Lone Eagle.
The sire of last season’s Equus Champion Rain In Holland, Duke Of Marmalade has two lots on offer at the upcoming CTS Ready To Run Sale.
