Drakenstein Stud’s champion resident sire Trippi looks to have a potentially outstanding runner on his hands in the form of 3yo Chimichuri Run. The colt made it back to back G3 victories when running out a clear cut four and a quarter length winner of the G3 Spring Spree Stakes (delayed a week) at Turffontein on Saturday.
Bred by the Drakenstein Stud, the handsome chestnut has now won or placed in all six of starts with Saturday’s impressive graded victory pushing the Sean Tarry trained Chimichuri Run’s earnings to R594 875.
Chimichuri Run, a R1.1 million buy from the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, had previously won the G3 Haval Motors South Africa Umkhomazi Stakes by 4.75 lengths on his final outing as a 2yo and was also third in both the G1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion and G2 SA Nursery last season. He looks destined for bigger things in the future!
He is one of several hugely exciting 3yos representing Trippi this season, with others including unbeaten Perfect Promise Sprint winner Lessedi La Rona, G1 Thekwini Stakes runner up Railtrip and the facile recent winner Trip To The Sky.
Chimichuri Run was one of two feature race winners on the weekend for his sire, whose talented son Baritone, second in both the G3 Byerley Turk and G3 Matchem Stakes in South Africa, lifted the Princess Margaret Cup in Mauritius on the same day. The Drakenstein Stud bred Baritone had previously tasted feature race success in Mauritius when victorious in March’s Duchess Of York Cup.
Yet another son of Trippi (South Africa’s Champion Sire in 2015-2016) in the form of Fifty Cents made it win number eight when landing a pinnacle stakes, over a field which included dual Merchants winner and millionaire Tevez, at Durbanville on Saturday for trainer Justin Snaith and jockey Richard Fourie. Bred by Drakenstein Stud, the talented 6yo had previously won both the Listed Jet Master Stakes and Fairview Mile, and Saturday’s three parts of a length win pushed Fifty Cents’ earnings to just under R600 000.
The sire of 72 stakes winners (and counting!), Trippi has also twice been Leading Sire of 3YOs in South Africa and he is joined in 2018 at Drakenstein Stud by his son Gold Standard.
