BACK TO BACK GRADED WINS FOR WHAT A WINTER

4 January 2025

Drakenstein Stud’s top-class sire What A Winter has come up with yet another top-class performer in the form of Asiye Phambili.

The latter made it back-to-back graded stakes victories when she won the G2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes (1200m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.

Trained by Gareth Van Zyl, the five-year-old had impressed when winning the G3 World Sports Betting Southern Cross Stakes last time out, and she duly followed up on Saturday.

Under Richard Fourie, Asiye Phambili unleashed a fine turn of foot which propelled the What A Winter to the lead close home.

From there, the five-year-old kept finding to hold off promising three-year-old Roccapina and win by nearly half a length.

Bred by Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, the speedy mare has won eight of 21 starts for earnings of R1 012 863.

Out of the Rambo Dancer mare Cast A Spell, Asiye Phambili has a trio of graded wins to her credit, with the What A Winter daughter also victorious in the 2024 G3 Dennis Drier Poinsettia Stakes.

Asiye Phambili is one of three daughters of What A Winter to have won the Sceptre Stakes, with Clouds Unfold prevailing in 2019 and Magical Wonderland victorious in 2018.

What A Winter is also the sire of classy mare Nettleton, who was beaten just a short-head when second in the recent G3 Betway Lebelo Sprint.

To date, the four-time G1 winner has been responsible for 26 stakes winners, including the Equus Champions Isivunguvungu and Russet Air.
