FUTURA STAR LANDS TABGOLD DERBY

16 June 2024

Drakenstein Stud’s resident sire Futura enjoyed more big race success when his champion son Future Pearl won the G3 Tabgold Derby at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.

Trained by Sean Tarry, the four-year-old relishes the Greyville track, with Future Pearl having now won three graded races at the Durban racecourse.
Future Pearl was given a confident ride by the record-breaking Richard Fourie, with Fourie allowing his mount to settle at the back of the field in Saturday’s R350 000 contest.

Fourie bought his mount with a strong, sustained late challenge, and the pair stormed home to win convincingly by a length.

Future Pearl’s win was all the more meritorious by the fact that his jockey lost his crop close home, with Richard steering his charge to a hands and heels win.

Equus Champion Stayer of 2023-2024, Future Pearl has now won six of 19 starts with his latest win pushing the gelding’s earnings to R1 436 375.

The champion, who could well run next in the G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July, won the G3 World Sports Betting Gold Bowl, G3 DStv Gold Vase and G3 World Pool Gold Cup last season.

Bred by Drakenstein Stud, Future Pearl, a R525 000 buy from the 2021 National Yearling Sale, is out of the Al Mufti mare Arabian Pearl.

His four-time G1 winning sire Futura has enjoyed success in Kwa-Zulu Natal of late, with another son of Futura, Future Swing, victorious in the recent G2 World Sports Betting 1900.

South Africa’s Horse Of The Year of 2014-2015, Futura has a single filly on offer at the upcoming KZN Yearling Sale.
