21st WINNER FOR ONE WORLD

12 June 2024

Drakenstein Stud’s red hot young stallion One World came up with his 21st first-crop winner when his daughter Maritzburg Memory won at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Tuesday.

In the process, the son of Captain Al is now within one winner of equalling his own’s sire first-season sires record of 22 juvenile winners.

Trained, like her sire, by Vaughan Marshall, Maritzburg Memory was always up with the pace in Tuesday’s Cape Turf Club Maiden Juvenile Plate (Fillies) (1200m), and when asked the question by Oswald Noach, she kicked away to win by two lengths.

Bred by Laurence Wernars in partnership with Braam Van Huyssteen, Maritzburg Memory was making just her third start on Tuesday, with the well-bred filly having finished fifth on debut before finishing fourth next time out.

Maritzburg Memory is out of the Pathfork mare Mighty High.
Her G1 Sun Met winning sire One World is not only South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2023-2024, but he is also the country’s Leading Sire of 2YOs.

Stars of One World’s first crop include G3 City Of Cape Town Cape Of Good Hope Nursery/G3 Winter Nursery winner One Stripe and Lion Rampart and Miss World -the first two home in the Listed Somerset 1200.

The former Equus Champion has some very well-bred yearlings on offer at the KZN Yearling Sale including a filly (Lot 65) out of Listed Winter Oaks winner Duchess Of Bourbon, a half-sister (Lot 85) to recent Listed Milkwood Stakes winner Paris Lass, and a colt (Lot 158) bred on similar lines to the Captain Al sired G3 winner Cousin Liz.
