Drakenstein Stud’s consistently successful stallion Futura was the toast of Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday when his son The Futurist ran out a front-running winner of the G3 Pocket Power Stakes (1950m).
Like his sire, trained by Brett Crawford, five-year-old The Futurist was given a very enterprising ride by Anthony Andrews in Sunday’s R350 000 graded feature.
Andrews took his mount to the front with the pair pulling further and further clear of their rivals. At the top of the Kenilworth straight, The Futurist was many lengths clear and it was only a matter of who would run second.
At the wire, The Futurist, runner up in the 2023 G3 World Sports Betting Pocket Power Stakes, had won by nine and a quarter lengths, with the favourite Pacaya well beaten in second spot.
Bred by Pete Carolin, The Futurist has now won five of 22 starts with the gelding having earned R562 050 in prize money.
The Futurist, who is out of the Black Minnaloushe mare Black Mischief, is the 17th stakes winner for Futura, South Africa’s Horse Of The Year in 2014-2015.
Futura also enjoyed success at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday when his progressive son Spelling Bee ran out a convincing winner of the fourth race on the card.
Under an inform Craig Zackey, the Dean Kannemeyer trained three-year-old stormed home to land the Aha Hotels & Lodges MR 78 Handicap (1600m) by nearly two lengths.
Unbeaten in two starts at Greyville, the Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm-bred Spelling Bee has now won twice from just nine starts and he looks to be a very smart sort in the making.
His four-time G1 winning sire Futura has seven lots on offer at the upcoming Cape Racing Winter Yearling Sale and a single yearling on sale at the 2024 KZN Yearling Sale.
