Drakenstein Stud’s highly successful sire, and former South African Horse Of The Year, Futura was the toast of Fairview racecourse on Sunday when his son Future Swing ran out a convincing winner of Sunday’s Listed Jonsson Workwear Algoa Cup (2000m), Port Elizabeth’s biggest horse-race.
Third over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville last time out, four-year-old Future Swing was trying the 2000m trip for the first time on Sunday, but took the step up in trip in his stride with a fluent victory in the 2023 Algoa Cup.
Under JP Van Der Merwe, the Justin Snaith trained four-year-old stormed down the centre of the track to hit the front 100m from home, and Future Swing powered away to claim his biggest win to date by a length and a quarter.
One of two runners for his sire in the race, Future Swing has now won five of 14 starts, with the gelding’s Algoa Cup win pushing his earnings to R556 475.
Bred by his part-owner Drakenstein Stud, Future Swing is the 16th stakes winner for his four time G1 winning sire Futura.
Future Swing is out of the Trippi mare Carousel Swing, and he is thus bred on the same Futura/Trippi cross as fellow stakes winners Pink Tourmaline, Vihaan’s Pie, Sweet Future, Dawnofanewday and Future Girl.
The latter, winner of the 2023 Listed World Sports Betting Stormsvlei Stakes, was one of six stakes winners for Futura in 2022-2023, with this tally headed by graded stakes winners Future Pearl and Rockpool. Futura was responsible for more stakes winners last season than such high-class stallions as Querari, Master Of My Fate, Silvano, The United States and Var, with his progeny earning more than R6.283 million in 2022-2023.
The champion son of Dynasty has nine lots on offer at the 2023 November Two Year Old Sale, including a half-brother (Lot 31) to G2 WSB Guineas runner up Supreme Warrior, a half-brother (Lot 32) to G1 Pongracz Cape Flying Championship second place finisher Mr Cobbs, and a half-brother (Lot 52) to last season’s G2 Tabgold Umkhomazi Stakes victor Outlaw King.
