Drakenstein Stud’s veteran champion Trippi’s fantastic season continued on Saturday when his classy son Trip Of Fortune claimed the G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes (1600m) at Turffontein.
In the process, the four-year-old became his sire’s 12th individual G1 winner.
Travelling up from the Cape to contest Saturday’s R1 000 000 contest, the Candice Bass-Robinson trained Trip Of Fortune received a great ride from Aldo Domeyer.
The latter bought his mount with a sustained late challenge, which saw the Cape raider power home the outside of the Turffontein track to collar front runner, and 2022 Horse Chestnut Stakes winner, MK’s Pride and win going away by a length and a quarter.
Further back in running came the G1 winners Anfields Rocket, Under Your Spell, Puerto Manzano, Red Saxon, Thunderstruck and Golden Ducat.
Bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, Trip Of Fortune has now won eight of 16 starts for earnings of R1 550 250.
The gelding, who is out of the Doowaley mare Louvre, has won stakes races at two, three and four, with Trip Of Fortune having also claimed both the G2 World Sports Betting Green Point Stakes and G3 Hollywoodbets Matchem Stakes earlier this season.
His sire Trippi, South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016, is having a stunning year this season, with his other flagbearers including fellow G1 winners Charles Dickens (Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas) and Jet Dark (World Sports Betting Cape Town Met).
The sire of 90 stakes winners thus far, Trippi has four lots on offer at the upcoming National Yearling Sale.
