TRIPPI COLT DAZZELS IN THE CAPE GUINEAS

17 December 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s outstanding stallion Trippi looks to have come up with an exceptional champion in the form of Charles Dickens.

That unbeaten three-year-old stamped himself as the best horse of his generation when romping home to a four and a quarter length win in the G1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas (1600m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.

Trained by Candice Bass-Robinson, Charles Dickens had won all five of his starts prior to the Cape Guineas on Saturday and was sent off a well backed favourite to win the R2 000 000 classic.

Given a patient ride by Aldo Domeyer, Charles Dickens raced towards the back of the field for much of the race, before Domeyer unleashed his star colt down the outside of the track.

When Charles Dickens hit top gear, it was simply a matter of who would finish second, as the Trippi pulled clear to demolish a high-class field as he liked.

His connections were quick to praise the brilliant colt after the race, saying that Charles Dickens was a freak and the best horse they had had anything to do with.

Bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, Charles Dickens has now won all six of his starts and the world is his oyster!

The Guineas was the colt’s first G1 victory, with Charles Dickens having also claimed last season’s Listed TAB Somerset 1200 and this season’s G3 Cape Classic.

A full-brother to G1Gbets Cape Derby runner up Charles and Listed Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy winner Somerset Maugham, Charles Dickens is out of Dynasty’s G2 winning daughter Demanding Lady.

South Africa’s latest equine star, Charles Dickens is the 11th G1 winner for Trippi –South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016.

Trippi, whose past stars include the likes of five time G1 winner Inara and G1 SA Classic winner Lobo’s Legend, has had a magnificent year in 2022, with his flag bearers including the likes of Charles Dickens, multiple Equus Champion Jet Dark and promising young sire Gold Standard.

The son of End Sweep has also been faring well as a broodmare sire, with Trippi damsire of recent G2 Cape Merchants winner Gimme A Prince among others.
