FUTURA CONTINUES TO FIRE

17 October 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s inform sire Futura continues to make waves, with Futura progeny continue to win all over South Africa.
In the past 12 days, Futura has been responsible for no fewer than eight winners, with his progeny also snaring a further eight placings during that period.

Futura struck again at Turffontein on Saturday afternoon when his classy daughter Pink Tourmaline defeated a high-class field to win the Furious Room Coffee Shop Now Open Pinnacle Stakes (1800m) in impressive fashion.

Under JP Van Der Merwe, the Crawford trained five-year-old powered away to win by more than a length and a half, while accounting for champion Nebraas, with fellow graded stakes winners Marchingontogether, Bold Fortune, Second Base, Black Thorn, Divine Odyssey, Imperial Ruby and Ultra Magnus among the beaten runners.

Winner of last season’s G2 Track And Ball Oaks, the Drakenstein Stud bred Pink Tourmaline (who holds an entry for the 2022 G1 Gauteng Summer Cup) has now won seven of 19 starts, with the Futura mare’s other previous wins including a triumph in the 2022 Listed Ardmore Jamaica Handicap.
Out of the Trippi mare Sapphire Gem, Pink Tourmaline is bred on the same Futura/Trippi cross as fellow black type winners Sweet Future and Vihaan’s Pie.

Futura struck yet again the following day when his three-year-old daughter Natalia ran out a game winner of the www.pinkdrive.co.za Maiden Plate (F&M) over 1600 metres at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Bred and owned by Verna Roberts, the Michael Roberts trained filly had finished second last time out and duly went one better when landing Sunday’s race by just under half a length.

His sizzling run of form has seen Futura, South Africa’s Horse Of The Year in 2014-2015, leapfrog up the General Sires list for 2022-2023, with the champion son of Dynasty currently higher on the South African sires premiership than such notable stallions as Rafeef, Ideal World and Dynasty himself!

Futura has five lots catalogued for the 2022 November Two Year Old Sale including a half-sister (Lot 87) to G2 WSB Guineas runner up Supreme Warrior, and a colt (Lot 180) bred on similar lines to the Dynasty sired champion Bela-Bela.
