Fresh off supplying Tuesday’s G3 World Sports Betting Magnolia (1160m) winner Sound Of Warning, Drakenstein Stud’s champion sire Trippi showed his versatility when his son Crome Yellow successfully defended his title in Saturday’s G3 Cape Summer Stayers Handicap (2400m).
Winner of the same race 12 months earlier, the Sabine Plattner bred and owned Crome Yellow was having his first start on Saturday since June, but this proved no obstacle to the talented gelding.
Under Grant Van Niekerk, the Andre Nel trained seven-year-old came with a strong late burst which saw Crome Yellow get up close home and land Saturday’s R150 000 feature by half a length, defeating last season’s G3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup winner Black Knap into second, with 2021 G3 WSB Pocket Power Stakes winner Crimson King a further three-parts of a length away in third spot.
Out of the Jallad mare Senorita Sol, Crome Yellow has now won nine of 31 starts, with his previous triumphs also including the 2020 Listed Woolavington Handicap.
He is one of 84 stakes winners for his sire Trippi, whose other current flagbearers include the aforementioned Sound Of Warning, plus graded stakes winning three-year-olds Amanzimtoti and Trip Of Fortune.
