Drakenstein Stud’s four time G1 winning stallion What A Winter has been in tremendous form this week, with the multiple Equus Champion supplying four winners in just three days at the start of the week.
What A Winter kicked started the week when his son Tread Swiftly scored at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Monday.
Trained by Peter Muscutt, four-year-old Tread Swiftly showed tremendous heart when fighting off runner up Ralph The Rascal to win Monday’s Greyville Convention Centre MR 93 Handicap (1400m), under a good ride from Donovan Dillon.
Bred by Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud (who also bred What A Winter’s top-class daughter Celestial Love), Tread Swiftly has now won five times for earnings of over R300 000.
The gelding, who is out of the Jet Master mare Butterfly Girl, was a R425 000 buy from the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
His sire went onto enjoy a double at Fairview on Tuesday, where What A Winter son What A Winner won the seventh race and his daughter Princess Of Winter won the eighth and final race for Gavin Smith and Warren Kennedy.
Bred by Favour Stud, What A Winner has now won nine races, with the Juan Nel trained gelding having amassed more than R700 000 in stakes.
What A Winter’s fourth success over the past few days came when his Eric Sands trained son Trivial Matter made all, under Richard Fourie, to beat fellow What A Winter son What A Man by half a length in Wednesday’s Next Meeting 23 March Durbanville MR 79 Handicap (1000m) at Durbanville.
Bred, like his sire, by Daytona Stud, Trivial Matter was making it back to back wins, with the lightly raced gelding having won two of just four starts.
South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2020-2021, and Leading First Season Sire of 2016-2017, What A Winter has 21 lots on offer at this year’s National Yearling Sale.
